Reviving the Himalayan Forests: A mission to restore and rejuvenate the damaged landscape of Kumaon.

The Ecological Crisis of 2025

In the summer of 2025, the serene forests of Kumaon in Uttarakhand, particularly around Kukuchhina near Dwarahat, were severely impacted by devastating forest fires. What once stood as a thriving ecosystem of rich biodiversity was reduced to charred land, threatening not only wildlife but also the livelihoods of local communities dependent on these forests.

Project Punarjeevan: A Mission to Restore

In response to this ecological crisis, Vanprastha Foundation initiated Project Punarjeevan — a mission to restore and rejuvenate the damaged Himalayan landscape. Staying true to the philosophy of harmony between humans and nature, the foundation undertook a large-scale plantation drive, successfully planting over 500 endemic tree species native to the region.

Our choice of endemic species ensures that the new growth is resilient, supports local pollinators, and restores the natural water retention capacity of the soil—critical for preventing future environmental degradation.

Rooted in Community

What made this initiative truly impactful was the active participation of local village communities. Their knowledge of the land, climate, and native species played a crucial role in ensuring that the plantation was both ecologically appropriate and sustainable.

This collaboration not only accelerated restoration efforts but also fostered a sense of ownership and responsibility among the people. Project Punarjeevan is more than just a plantation drive — it is a step towards healing nature, restoring balance, and building resilience against future environmental challenges.

A Sustainable Future

It reflects Vanprastha Foundation’s commitment to nurturing ecosystems while empowering communities to protect and preserve their natural heritage for generations to come.
